Aug. 15, 2008
AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas soccer team was picked to win the 2008 Big 12 title in a vote of the league's 11 head coaches, announced by the conference on Thursday. The Longhorns received five of 10 first-place votes and totaled 94 points. Texas A&M was second with four first-place votes for 93 points, while Missouri came in third with 77 points and two first-place nods. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team or players. Three UT players also received preseason All-Big 12 honors - senior defenders Stephanie Logterman and Kasey Moore, and sophomore forward Niki Arlitt. Logterman and Moore were both preseason selections a year ago with Moore going on to earn the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year award. The senior also garnered her second-straight National Soccer Coaches of America/adidas All-America honor with her third-team selection. Logterman, a two-time All-Big 12 First Team selection, recorded the second-most assists for UT last season (five) despite only playing in 17 matches due to a midseason injury. Arlitt, the only sophomore named to the 12-player preseason team, shared the UT leading scorer role with Kelsey Carpenter in 2007 with 10 goals and five assists for 25 points. Arlitt's goals, which included four gamewinners, came on just 43 shots. The Houston, Texas, native finished the season ranked in the league's top five in points (t5th), goals (5th), goals per game (5th), game-winning goals (t4th). Earlier this week, the Horns were named the No. 8 team in the nation in the 2008 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas preseason poll.
